WebMartlesham Heath village is situated 6 miles (10 km) east of Ipswich, in Suffolk, England. This was an ancient area of heathland and latterly the site of Martlesham Heath Airfield. A "new village" was established there in the mid-1970s and this has developed into a modern community, based on a traditional village pattern. WebMartlesham Heath was first used as a Royal Flying Corps airfield during World War I. In 1917 it became associated with experimental aircraft and was later the home of the Aeroplane and Armament Experimental Establishment (A&AEE), which tested many of the aircraft and much of the equipment that would later be used in during World War II.
